Protecting Health and Preventing the Spread of Infection in Care Environments
Infection prevention and control is a critical responsibility in any health or care setting. The Fundamentals of Infection Control Principles course equips Support Workers with the knowledge and practical skills required to minimize the risk of infection and maintain a safe environment for clients, colleagues, and themselves.
This unit focuses on understanding and applying both standard and transmission-based precautions, identifying infection risks, and responding effectively to infection hazards—ensuring adherence to organizational protocols and national standards.
Participants who successfully complete this training will demonstrate a clear understanding of essential infection control responsibilities and procedures, and the ability to implement them confidently in everyday practice.

• Following standard and additional precautions for infection prevention and control
• Identifying infection hazards and assessing risk in the care environment
• Managing risks associated with specific hazards and exposure
• Correct use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
• Hand hygiene, environmental cleanliness, waste management
• Application of transmission-based precautions (contact, droplet, airborne)
• Maintaining safe documentation and incident reporting procedures
