Overview

Supporting individuals living with epilepsy—especially those with disabilities—requires a deep understanding of the condition, a compassionate approach, and the confidence to act during seizure emergencies. This comprehensive training course is designed specifically for Disability Support Workers, equipping you with essential knowledge, practical skills, and clinical insight to provide safe, effective, and person-centred care.

In this advanced course, you will explore the complexities of epilepsy, including how it affects people living with disability. You'll learn to identify the various types of seizures and understand how they present, along with their physical, emotional, and social impacts. The course also covers how to minimise risk, promote safety, and respond with appropriate first aid measures.

A key component of this training focuses on the use of Midazolam, now recognised as the first-line emergency treatment for prolonged or cluster seizures. You will learn how to safely administer Midazolam via buccal and intranasal routes, understand when it is appropriate to use, and become familiar with potential side effects and complications.

This course builds on foundational knowledge of Seizure Management and advances your competence in emergency response, seizure documentation, and interpreting Epilepsy Management Plans (EMP). Through interactive learning, practical scenarios, and real-world guidance, you will gain the confidence to take timely, informed action during seizure events.

Topics Covered

  1. Recognising different seizures – impact on the person
  2. Common patterns and clusters of seizures, Febrile and infantile seizures and management
  3. Identify and minimise exposure to seizure risk factors
  4. Support and monitoring, unconscious position
  5. Complications – risk of related health complications associated with epilepsy
  6. Care plans – follow procedure and exercise judgement on when to call an Ambulance
  7. Demonstrate application of seizure First Aid
  8. Common methods of emergency management and potential side effects
  9. Parameters to guide decisions on PRN medication to administer
  10. Administration of Buccal / Intranasal Midazolam in emergency (If prescribed by Medical practitioner and written on care plan) – use, complications and side effects
