Overview
Providing personal care with dignity, safety, and professionalism is a vital aspect of your role as a Disability Support Worker. This Catheter Care Training Course is designed to equip you with the essential knowledge, practical skills, and confidence needed to support participants who require urinary catheter care.
Urinary catheters are often used when individuals are unable to empty their bladder independently due to medical conditions, disabilities, or recovery from surgery. As a support professional, understanding how catheters work, how to maintain hygiene, and how to respond to issues or emergencies is critical to ensuring a participant’s comfort, dignity, and overall well-being.
Topics Covered
- Understanding the procedure and implications for an IDC / SPC
- Daily care and infection / Hygiene precautions
- Complications, potential problems and troubleshooting
- Leaking, Urinary tract infections, blockage, no drainage
- Importance of monitoring, notification of concerns, additional fluids and dehydration
- Clean catheterisation technique
- Cleaning and safe use of equipment, materials, urine bags,
- Changing of leg and overnight bags.
